是六方形晶体层状结构。在常温下化学性质稳定。1370℃开始分解。315℃开始被氧化，温度越高氧化越快。
在各种介质和高温、低温、高负荷、高速度制动等情况下都有优异的润滑性和降低摩擦系数的特性。
在摩擦材料中作用：1.低温时减小摩擦系数降低磨损。
2.高温时由于摩擦过程中发生氧化转变为三氧化钼和三硫化钼失去层状结构，不能降低摩擦系数，但能够抑制树脂向钢铁表面的转移，有效的减小复合物的磨损提高其耐磨性，延长使用寿命。
3.氧化产物MoO3、MoS3和MoS2形成共聚物颗粒，温度升高时共聚物颗粒膨胀，从而产生增摩作用。
